Over the past few weeks I’ve taken on an initiative to refine the design of My Santa Fe Network. The previous design was nice (in a we rushed it kind of way) but it needed some attention and I wanted to make an emphasis on Responsive Design.

Although the new design is similar in ways to the previous website it’s also very different in function. I spent a lot of time on details. I wanted to keep the big Santa Fe scenic visuals on the home page header but also allow content to take precedence when needed.

It’s Responsive!

The latest initiative in web design is to create designs that respond to the size of your users device screen (mobile or tablet) or browser window (computer). About 23% of visitors are on mobile devices and this much of the market cannot be ignored. This doesn’t mean mobile devices cannot reach your website, it just makes browsing your website a lot more convenient without your visitors having to zoom in and out of content.

There’s a lot to Responsive Design so I wanted to test drive responsive elements in an environment where if they didn’t work properly it didn’t affect a customers website. I’m still working out some bugs with the responsive elements (vertical tablets) but those will be ironed out in time.

Visitor Engagement

I’m testing out other ways to get visitor engagement and one of those ways is a on-page chat functionality where prospective clients can ask questions and give feedback if they feel inclined.

Overall I’m very happy with the design but I gotta get back to the real work. Feel free to browse around. If your a previous client of mine please feel free to contact me about implementing responsive elements into your website. There are some very low cost alternatives to having to totally rebuild your website and some websites naturally lend themselves to responsive design.

My Santa Fe Network has launched a pretty cool support website to help track your website updates and projects.

If you’re having problems with your website or are just interested in a project in general please feel free to create an account and submit a services ticket. Whether you’re a My Santa Fe Network client or not we’ll assist you in whatever way we can.

The My Santa Fe Network support website marks an initiative to serve a broad base of clients. We realize that our client base is growing and managing support requests needed to get better. Transparency is the key issue when we considered the expansion.

This is very simple but AWESOME plugin. Recently I dealt with an issue where I found out my hosts backup solution for website files wasn’t working. Thankfully the file I was trying to recover was only a static CSS file and I was able to retrieve it through my Firefox browser cache. This method was a tedious process since Firefox encrypts your cache. Typically encryption is a good thing but not in this particular situation. Needless to say after hours of recovering things I didn’t need I was able to find the file, upload it and alleviate the situation. Crisis averted even though I probably lost two or three hours.

Backup Your Backup, Dummy!

The root of the problem here is I counted on my web hosts solution for backing up server files. I should have had a standalone backup solution. It sounds redundant but can be helpful. WordPress Backup to Dropbox is fantastic and it’s perfect for having a backup solution in-case your host fails or just doesn’t provide backups at all. Plus it’s completely separate from your host just-in-case they ever fail, fall off the face of the earth, or you get your account suspended. And the control aspect is a lot nicer too.

What is Dropbox?

Dropbox is a free (up to 2.5GB) cloud storage solution that allows you access to your Dropbox files anywhere and across a multitude of devices including your Android or iPhone mobile device. If you don’t use it for this I would suggest you find a reason to. It installs natively on your computer where you can can access it as if it were a folder on your computer. It’s very transparent and easy to use even for those that aren’t computer savy. A lot of my clients currently use it and share their web related files with me through Dropbox so it’s also a very nice collaboration tool. Don’t email that huge file! Upload it to your Dropbox folder and

My WordPress Backup to WordPress Usage Model

I build websites for clients and will be using this quite a bit for their backups. That’s a great start, however I will run out of space fast if I use my personal Dropbox account (standard user scenario). Thinking about this briefly my solution is to create a backup email account and Dropbox account for each domain/host: backup@yourclientsdomain.com. This way each website has its own stand alone backup solution and Dropbox account. You can give your client shared access to this account and let them store website material there if they are inclined to; logo artwork, project related document, etc.

Corinne approached MSFN with a simple idea for a company website that would act as a resource for their members and prospective clientele. The simple idea grew quite a bit over the design process as more features were requested by Dance Space.

Needs Assessment

Dance Space Santa Fe required an information driven interface that maintained an aesthetic value. My Santa Fe Network collaborated with two other entities at the request of Sue West to establish the branding colors and logo design for marketing. MSFN was also required to provide an interface to allow Dance Space Santa Fe’s management to be able to provide content, news and update scheduling.

I personally had a background with Harry while I worked as a web developer for Santa Fe County and I also built his website when he ran for President of the National Association of Counties (NACo).

After announcing his bid for New Mexico’s third Congressional District, Harry proved to have a great platform and My Santa Fe Network was more than happy to have him on board as a premier client.

During the website build Harry had an initial design in mind and although we played with a couple different themes he preferred to stay with a blue overall palette. Ultimately we were happy with the final outcome.

“My Santa Fe Network produced a fantastic web site for our campaign that is easy to read, follow and interact. Rob’s professionalism in discussing the development of the site and his quality of work and the efficiency in which he completed the work is excellent! We highly recommend him to anyone wanting this type of individual to do your web site.” – Harry Montoya
